A computer should be checked for critical Windows updates at least once a week to ensure the safe operation of software systems. Please follow these steps to perform a Windows Update.

1. Depending on what version of Windows you have you will click on the Start button and find a Windows Update option or click on Start > Programs and find a Windows Update option as in the diagram below.
   
   Additionally, you can direct your browser to http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

2. Once the Internet browser window opens, click on the Scan for Updates option in the middle of the screen.

3. The scan will take 3-5 minutes depending on your computer speed. Once the list of updates has been compiled, click on the Review and Install updates option.

4. A list of updates will appear. Click on the Install Now button.

5. The updates will be downloaded and installed. Upon completion you will receive a message of successful installation and a prompt to restart the computer. Once the computer has restarted, updates are complete.
